Every few days, somewhere, a rocket climbs out of the atmosphere — and the plume is visible for hundreds of miles. People post photos from balconies six states away asking what the glowing jellyfish in the sky was. The answer is almost always: a launch you could have watched too, if anything had told you to step outside.

How far away can you really see a launch?

Much farther than intuition says. A rocket is essentially a skyscraper-sized flare climbing to over 100 km, above your horizon even at long distances. At night, a Falcon 9 out of Cape Canaveral is routinely visible across most of Florida and up the southeastern seaboard. Vandenberg launches light up the sky across Southern California and beyond. The vehicle itself is a brilliant moving point; the exhaust plume can span degrees of sky.

The "jellyfish" effect

The most spectacular launches happen in twilight — roughly 30 to 60 minutes after sunset or before sunrise. The rocket climbs out of Earth's shadow into sunlight while the ground stays dark, and the exhaust plume, expanding in the thin upper atmosphere, catches the sun and glows blue-white and enormous. That's the famous jellyfish. If a launch near you is scheduled for twilight, treat it as an event.

The hard part is knowing when to look

Launch windows move. Scrubs happen. And the visibility math — exactly when the vehicle clears your horizon, in which direction, at what elevation — depends on your coordinates and the rocket's trajectory. Generic countdowns can't answer the only question that matters: at how many seconds after liftoff do I look, and which way?
